USS FITZGERALD (DDG-62) |
In the early morning of 17 June 2017, Fitzgerald collided with ACX Crystal 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan.
Fitzgerald has significant damage to her starboard side below the pilothouse. Several compartments were flooded, including at least one berthing space. Seven of her crew are deceased.
Many experts are coming out of the woodwork with their theories regarding this incident. While I respect their rights to have an opinion, I would ask (again) that they forbear. Much of what is being said is slanderous, and stated with reckless disregard to both facts and reputation. Having one ship's track (ACX Crystal) posted all over various media is an insufficient way to determine causation, let alone blame, for a tragedy at sea.
First, we need to take care of Fitzgerald's people. There is plenty of time for an investigation, after which people will be free to say what they will. Thank you for your consideration.
